Birmingham FA - developing football for everyone
About us - promoting local football

History

The journey has been an eventful one ever since our formation in 1875 when just 10 clubs joined together with the promise of control, organisation, planning and increased participation; but our original promises are still at the forefront of our operations today.

Moving away from our original City Centre home to one in nearby Aston in 1969, and later to a site in Great Barr gave us the opportunity to develop Headquarters with playing facilities attached.

From humble beginnings in a prefabricated building to the County HQ of today which incorporates our offices, Committee Rooms, changing facilities and The Walter Goodman Stadium. We now affiliate around 2500 clubs stretching across one of the largest County FA areas in the country.

With so much football played each week, we are here to ensure it is enjoyed in a safe, well disciplined environment.

Our 13 County Cup Competitions provide the opportunity for all our clubs to thrive—at all levels of participation.

Our representative team gives the region’s most talented players the opportunity to benefit from competitive football amongst others of similar ability.

Our award-winning Development Scheme provides opportunities for everyone to get involved in grassroots football by playing, coaching or volunteering.

Our curriculum based coaching sessions are extremely popular, whilst outside of school we organise leagues and courses to keep the interest alive.

Our support and administration of The FA Charter Standard scheme is helping clubs throughout our region prove they are safe and well operated, and in turn boost the quality of grassroots football on offer.

As The FA’s Number 1 Provider of Coach Education Courses (2004), we are playing a major part in delivering high quality instruction to Coaches of all ages and abilities.

Girls can now benefit from a clearly defined pathway—introducing them to the game and giving the opportunity to progress and develop their talent.  Barriers that had prevented more females from getting involved are being removed, with the introduction of what was the countries first ever “Women Only” training in Coaching and Refereeing, and the provision of mentor schemes to aid in their progression.

Our work in the Girls and Women’s game earned us an FA Football Development Award in 2002.

We also register over 2000 referees to ensure that fair play is observed by all—from Parks to the Premiership.

We work closely with The FA’s Regional Manager for Referees to highlight the role of the Referee and the important part they play in maintaining a fair, enjoyable game.

In addition to our rolling recruitment campaign, we are also aiming to encourage more referees to stay in the game.  This is being achieved by our programme of in-service training and our work to reduce the number of disciplinary cases occurring in all levels of football.

There is so much more to our work than you might think!
