FA Cup Win For Wolves Women

Wolves Women ran out 3-0 winners at Leafield in the FA Cup last week to set up a mouth-watering third round tie against Aston Villa on Sunday 14th December at Sutton Town FC.

The game was played on a heavy pitch at Rumbush Stadium in Solihull, making it difficult for Wolves to play their usual passing game.

Wolves piled on the pressure right from the kick-off, with early chances for Anne Johnson and Jenni Anslow.

On 24 minutes Wolves took the lead after an Anslow corner was met by the head of skipper Anna Perks.

In the scramble that followed, the Leafield keeper punched the ball out, but the Assistant Referee indicated that it had already crossed the line and Wolves were in front.

Wolves continued to press, with Amber Quick and Chevette Mais both thwarted by the Leafield defence but there were also chances at the other end.

Defender Claire Hakeman halted one Leafield attack with a fine tackle, and keeper Naomi Bruton made a diving save on 41 minutes to keep Wolves in front at the break.

Leafield started the second half well, putting Wolves under pressure, and within a minute of the restart Bruton was forced into another save as she closed down an advancing striker.

Her clearance then immediately put Wolves back on the attack with Mais picking up the ball and shooting just wide.

As Leafield continued to press, a 55th minute shot from long range brought a stunning save from Bruton once again.

Wolves’ manager Dave Ball responded by making some effective substitutions – including a debut in midfield for new signing Laura Smith – and on 74 minutes Wolves extended their lead.

Anslow flew past her defender on the wing and after reaching the byline, sent in a superb cross to the near post, which was helped into the back of the net by Johnson.

With Wolves now dominating, Anslow repeated the trick on 88 minutes, and this time her cross was met by Quick who headed past the keeper to seal an ultimately convincing win.

Manager Ball reflected: “I was pleased with today’s performance, especially considering the lay-off as we didn’t have a game last week.

“It was a difficult pitch to play on but we acquitted ourselves well. We’re looking forward to getting back to league action next week.”
