Tributes Paid to Referee

3:48 PM, Wednesday, 03 December 08. Refereeing

Figures from the grassroots game football paid to one of the oldest referees in the County whose funeral took place yesterday.

Frank Starkey had set himself an aim of officiating until his 80th birthday but was forced to put down his whistle at the end of last season. He lost his battle with cancer in November, aged 76.

The West Bromwich-born referee was actively involved in a variety of leagues and competitions but could regularly be found at Sandwell League and Midland Football Combination fixtures.

He was presented with a Long Service Award in recognition of his contribution to refereeing in 1993, 30 years after he first qualified as a Match Official.

Discipline Manager Mike Fellows and Referee Development Officer David Nixon represented Birmingham County FA at the funeral where current referees formed a guard of honour with flags:

“It was fitting to see so many referees old and new who were well aware of Frank’s dedication to refereeing and love of football,” said Mike.

“A great deal of people are extremely grateful for all he gave to the game, including Birmingham County FA.

“Our thoughts and best wishes are with Frank’s friends and family,” he added.
