Tesco Girls Week was filled with club open evenings and school competitions that looked to encourage more girls into the game from across the county. Clubs from Birmingham, The Black Country and CSW had large numbers of new recruits coming through their doors.
Shelley Gudgeon Football Development Officer said “We are so pleased to see such a positive outcome from girl’s week. It’s boosted the numbers of girl’s interested in playing for next season and we hope that interest will keep on growing throughout the summer”
The main event The Girl’s Football Extravaganza took place on Saturday and drew in nearly 100 females as England Women’s’ stars Emily Westwood and Laura Bassett watched on newly formed teams play their first matches. The Internationals also took time out to present the new teams with water bottles for the season ahead and goody bags for each player. Alongside the festival around 50 girls came to try their hand at the Tesco Skills Inflatable’s Station and took part in the coaching sessions.
Rachael Blunt, Football Development Officer said “What a fantastic turnout, I’m so happy that we’ve been able to give these girls their first real taste of football and we will continue to support these girls into local clubs”.
All in all the Tesco Girls football Week of action was a overwhelming success and plans are already in action to use the interest generated from the week to further enhance Girls football within the County.
