University plays host to National Young Leaders Camp

9:42 AM, Tuesday, 27 July 10. Events

Wolverhampton University hosted the Football Associations National Young Leaders and Volunteering Camp where over 100 young leaders from across the Country attended for a week of workshops and seminars run by experts in refereeing, coaching, media and equality, and was closed by World Cup Referee Howard Web

Each County FA was asked to nominate two young leaders, one boy and one girl to attend the camp. The young leaders came from a multitude of backgrounds and each participated in team building sessions and activities along side workshops to help build friendships and share knowledge.

Nicky Miles and Jack Longhurst were selected to attend the camp on behalf of Birmingham County Football Association based on their desire to learn and commitment to current volunteering projects.

Jack, a level 2 in Football Coaching, coaches at Brandhall Colts while Nicki is part of the Birmingham County FA’s Female Coach Mentoring Scheme and is currently undertaking her Level 2 in Football Coaching.

The young leaders were supported by a network of regional counsellors who left their day jobs as Football Development Officers for the week to be a part of the camp and contribute both their knowledge and expertise to develop the experience that the young leaders had.

Claire Mulvenna, Birmingham County FA Football Development Officer for Growth, Retention and Workforce attended as regional counsellor on behalf of the West Midlands along with Ted Grizzell, a former young leader himself who has been through the FA National Young Leaders Programme and is a Community Coach at Worcestershire FA.

The National Young Leaders and Volunteering Camp for 2010 was ended by FIFA World Cup Final referee Howard Webb who gave an inspirational speech to the young leaders which gave them the added motivation to make a real difference in their community and strive to reach their full potential within football.
