Junior Futsal Participation Set To Boom This Winter

New Futsal Leagues to start across the County

This winter will see a revolution in Youth Football across the country, with many youth leagues introducing Futsal into their season to help prevent week-after-week of cancelled matches during the winter months.

Recent years have seen a number of harsh winters with snow, floods, and other poor weather conditions affecting the amount of football being played. Of course, this affects all participants of the game, adult players as much as youth.

But for young players learning the game and developing their skills and love for football, these long absences during the winter months without any football can be particularly detrimental.

This season 32 youth leagues around the country will be changing their winter programme to offer 12,000 young players, both boys and girls, the opportunity to play Futsal.

Birmingham County FA will be working with Tamworth Junior Football League, Sandwell Minor League, and Central Warwickshire Girls' Football League to support 3 brand new Futsal Leagues.

Futsal is a 5-a-side format of the game that is primarily played in indoor sports-halls and is recognised for the benefits it can impart on the technical development of young players.  So not only will young boys and girls be escaping the harsher winter elements by playing indoors, but they will also be playing a format of the game that can significantly support their development.

Our Development Officer, Will Perkins, who leads on Futsal throughout the County added:

“Increasing our Futsal provision in Birmingham County has allowed us to develop the game in a variety of ways, working primarily with clubs and schools.

This new fund will allow leagues to implement Futsal into their league structure and provide opportunities set out by The FA’s Youth Review. In recent seasons we have seen an increase in the technical and tactical ability of teams participating regularly in Futsal and we hope that this will have a positive effect on teams within our 3 leagues.

These Charter Standard leagues will also join the local Futsal pathway and allow high achieving teams the opportunity to qualify for regional and national tournaments”.
