MATCH PREVIEW: MIDWEEK FLOODLIT CUP
A flurry of midweek County Cup Finals begins at Solihull Moors FC on Tuesday 10 May, with the Midweek Floodlit Cup kicking off at 7.30pm between Darlaston Town (1874) and Wednesfield.
Although there are just three rounds to get through to reach the final, both of these clubs have had tricky fixtures to overcome to ensure they booked their place at tonight’s game for the chance of taking silverware home.
Darlaston Town (1874) began their quest for victory against Dudley Sports where they scored three with no return to put themselves into the quarter final where they came up against the current holders, Atherstone Town. They narrowly edged past them with a 1-0 win, before they met O J M Black Country in the semi final where they were on the right side of a six-goal thriller, winning 4-2. Having appeared once before in this competition’s final under their previous name, back in 2009 where they were runners up, Darlaston Town (1874) will be hoping for success this time out.
Meanwhile, Wednesfield, who have never appeared in this competition’s final will be hoping for the fortuitous run this season to continue. Having started extremely strong in the first round putting 5 past Nuneaton Griff, they edged past Chelmsley Town in the quarter final with a 3-1 victory. In the semi-final, they met a resilient Dudley Town who held them to a 1-1 draw in normal time, setting up a dramatic penalty shootout which eventually Wednesfield successfully despatched the final strike winning 5-4 from the spot.
Both sets of supporters will be hoping for a tightly contested local derby with plenty of action to shout about, drawing a close to the team’s long seasons.
