MATCH PREVIEW: MINOR CHALLENGE CUP

AFC Gornal U16 take on Redditch United U16 in the 2022 Minor Challenge Cup

The busiest week of Birmingham County Football Association’s County Cup Finals season comes to a close on Sunday 15 May as AFC Gornal take on Redditch United U16 in the 2022 Minor Challenge Cup. The fixture is set to take place at the BCFA Excellence Arena, kicking off at 11am.

This competition has been running since 1978/79 and in its history, neither of the two teams involved this season have reached this stage before so both will be looking to add the trophy to their history.

One thing that spectators can almost be guaranteed in this cup final is goals, as an astonishing 56 goals have been scored between the two sides on their respective runs to the final. Taking a look at their routes, both received byes in the first round so entered the competition in the second where Redditch despatched Halesowen Town 14-1, whilst Gornal edged past Darlaston Town (1874) Cannons 4-2. In the third round, Redditch found themselves on the receiving end of a home win walkover, as Gornal put 5 past Stonydelph Juniors to put both teams into the fourth round. Here, Gornal brushed aside Bustleholme winning 3-1, but goals were aplenty for Redditch as they smashed 11 past Black Country Harriers to book their respective places in the quarter final. In this round alone, the two teams scored 15 goals as Gornal were victorious with an 8-2 win over Hillfield AFC White and Redditch put 7 past FC Premier without return. Along came the semi-final, and when here, neither team were fazed again as they both recorded 2-0 victories with Redditch beating Boldmere St Michaels and Gornal getting the better of Bedworth United.

Whilst there have been 56 goals scored between the two teams on their way to the final, there has also only been 8 conceded. Spectators will be hoping to see end-to-end goalmouth action in the Sunday morning fixture, especially with the prospect of either side taking the trophy home for the first time.
