BCFA Uni League Line Up

University League Finals Day 2023

Birmingham County FA's University League Finals day is set to take place on Wednesday 15 March 2023.

Birmingham County FA's University League Finals Day is now set and ready to take place on Wednesday 15 March 2023.

This year the Men’s Final is again contested by the two University of Birmingham Development sides, this is the second year running that UoB have forced a shut-out of the competition. The league season this year featured 10 teams and saw a plethora of results with many teams picking up crucial victories. University of Warwick finished the main season top collecting 18 points from 8 games, they lined up against Birmingham City University in the Quarter Finals after BCU had took points from half their games. Warwick would win the Quarter Final 6-3 before facing the Dev 1 side from University of Birmingham in the Semi-Final. The Dev 1 team had a mixed season finishing 4th on 11 points, they would go on to beat Aston Stags in the Quarter’s after Aston also picked up 11 points in the main season. WLV Sport finished the playing season in 2nd place after 4 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. They went on to defeat Coventry University in the Quarter Finals 3-1 before falling victim to the University of Birmingham Dev 2’s in the Semi-Finals. The Dev 2 team finished the season above their University counterparts in 3rd place, they saw off a fresh University College Birmingham side on penalties in the last 8 of the competition. Elsewhere in the league Wolves Foundation and Warwick Medics both picked up victories however it sadly wasn’t enough to qualify for the knock-out stages. Last years final ended in the University of Birmingham Dev 1 side picking up a 2-1 victory, so the Dev 2’s will be eager for revenge.

Regardless of result, one thing that is certain is University of Birmingham will be etching their name on the trophy for the fourth time in seven years. The competition was established in 2013 with the inaugural winners crowned as Warwick Medics, who also picked up the trophy in 2019, Coventry University have etched their name on the crown in 2016.

For the first time in the competition’s history, there will also be a Women’s Final hosted on Wednesday 15 March 2023. The competition was originally formed in 2013 however never got off the ground sadly. The 2022/23 season saw 5 teams register interest to compete and just as the BUCS season started, the Female University League got underway. University of Birmingham finished the playing season top after racking up a tally of 18 points across 7 games, only dropping points to an Aston side who sadly had to drop out the competition only a few weeks later. They defeated their Final opponents, University of Derby, on two occasions so the Derbyshire side will be eager to ‘win the big one’ against their Birmingham opposition. The U D S U side had mixed fortunes during the season, picking up 3 wins and 3 defeats however when it mattered most they saw of a Birmingham City University team 5-2 in the Semi-Final. They will no doubt be hoping to emulate that performance at Ray Hall Lane next week. Elsewhere University of Warwick deserve a positive mention for their attitude during the season, never giving up and doing the Warwickshire contingent proud.
