Flexible Football Is Back: Birmingham FA Launch U21s Football League

Birmingham FA has been selected to deliver one of the pilot projects that will hopefully be successful and develop in a full time initiative.

The league is launching On Thursday 6th July at Heartlands and games will be played between 6:00pm -9:00pm and depending on numbers then teams will play one game every two weeks.

Birmingham FA U21's League

  • 50 minute games
  • £30 per team
  • Roll on roll off subs
  • Each team to receive a 4 minute period of power play where goals count double during this time.
  • Squad of 17 players

The main emphasise of the league is to see the transition of players through to adult football so there will also be support available from our Football Development team. There will also be advice and guidance around funding and the progression of both team and player.

Birmingham FA Adult Football Development Officer Matthew Price said of the new league “This is an exciting new project that will hopefully see a number of players from this age group progress to adult football. We have tried to put a different twist on things using a period of power play where goals count double and the reason behind this is that this is a way of encouraging players to think more tactically and to coach players without keep stopping the session.

When the opposition play their power play your team has to close down the ball and ensure there is little space available and you keep possession for as long as possible. However when your team use their period of power play then you have to play forward quickly and get your shots in when you have time and space and you have to ensure you continue to create space. Encouraging players to think more tactically will hopefully aid development"

We still have spaces available within this league so if any teams maybe interested then please contact Matthew Price ASAP to register
