Birmingham FA delivers first of its kind Inclusive Level 1 Course

Birmingham Football Association in partnership with West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham Ability Counts, College & Community, Sandwell Inclusive, and…

Jasbir Batt worked in partnership with the Albion Foundation and The FA County Coach Developer for Birmingham, Steve Pritchard, to adapt the course to ensure appropriate support was provided to ensure candidates were given the best possible experience.

Jasbir Batt, Disability Football Development Officer commented “To every barrier there are solutions. The solution sums up this particular course to remove any myths and perceptions. A clear strategy was put in place for a bespoke course with measured outcomes of success along this learning journey.

The key was to retain and reward coaches through the years of hard work and commitment in the game. So by building people, we are constantly looking for the next cohort of coaches to upskill ensuring that there is sustainability and longevity. This has been a great achievement and hope to continue in cementing and building the foundations for the future”.

The course consisted over 7 weeks, 3 ½ hours a day across Thursdays and Fridays mornings, with appropriate disability equipment used during practical delivery. Delivering the course over this period gave enough time for candidates to build experiences particularly off the course along with the completion of their learning journals.

The aim of the project was to upskill workforce; increase standards of coaching and impact the wider disability programme with 18 volunteers completing of The FA Level 1 in Coaching Football qualification.

The course was delivered by Steve Pritchard, who was on hand before, during and after the course. Following the course, a coach currently supporting a Powerchair club has decided to challenge himself and work with mainstream players. A FA Charter Standard Community Club has been identified and an agreement has been put in place for the coach to be working with the team in due course.

All 18 candidates that have completed the course; 8 Powerchair, 6 Learning Disabilities, 1 Partially Sighted, and 3 Cerebral Palsy, who are out there delivering and impacting on the Birmingham County FA Disability Workforce Fund Programme.
