PREVIEW: SUNDAY VASE

Coventry Empire and Hundred Acre Reds come together in the 2022 Sunday Vase Final

The BCFA Excellence Arena plays host to its second County Cup Final in the space of two days on Sunday 24 April, as the headquarters hosts the 2022 Sunday Vase Competition Final, kicking off at 11.00am.

With the current holders playing to retain the trophy, this year’s final looks set to be a competitive affair. Launched in the 1987/88 season, the Sunday Vase is a trophy that both sides have had success in their respective history, with Hundred Acre winning back in 1991. These two teams met in the 2019 competition and that was a closely contested fixture with Coventry Empire pipping a penalty shootout victory on their way to winning the trophy.

This season, Coventry Empire entered the competition at the second-round stage, having been granted a bye in the first. An outstanding 7-0 win over Bradmore Social was followed up with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Kings Athletic, which set up a quarter-final tie with Sedgley Sporting. The Coventry based side eased past that test with a 3-0 win, before coming up against their toughest test in the semi-final. Digby Hotel were the first team to put the ball in the back of the Coventry Empire net and with the score level at 1-1, the tie was decided by penalties; with the latter edging into the final with a 4-2 win to set up today’s fixture.

Hundred Acre Reds, on the other hand, were the only fixture to feature in the first round where they put 5 past Bordesley Rovers before being handed a second-round home win walkover. In the third round, they edged past Hampton Senior with a 2-0 victory and followed that up by notching a 6-1 win against FC Albany to reach the semi-final. Setting up their final adventure, they put 4 past Widdas and they will hope to end Coventry Empire’s hopes of retaining the trophy whilst taking revenge for the 2019 quarter-final defeat.

With these two teams capable of scoring goals, the Sunday Vase Competition Final promises to be an exciting, action-packed fixture.
