PREVIEW: ROGER WOOD MEMORIAL CUP

Codsall Legion Sundats face Power FC in the 2022 Roger Wood Memorial Cup Final

An entertaining Birmingham County Cup finals season continues on Sunday 8 May as Codsall Legion Sundats face off with Power FC for the prestigious Roger Wood Memorial Cup. The match is set to be played at the home of the Birmingham County FA, the BCFA Excellence Arena, and due to get underway at 11.00am.

Formerly known as the Sunday Cup, the competition was renamed in honour of dedicated grassroots football servant, Roger Wood; a former Chairman of Birmingham County FA, who held the post for over 22 years and sadly passed away in 2013. Neither of the two clubs involved today have featured in the final of this competition before since it’s inaugural season as the Sunday Cup in 1971/72 so both will be hoping to make history for their respective clubs.

Both teams had close calls in their respective runs to the final, starting with Codsall who edged past Edgbaston Priory in the first round with a 2-1 victory before being handed an away walkover win in the second round. Into the quarter-final, they were once again on the right side of a 2-1 result against Longbridge Social before they had their easiest game of their route where they smashed 9 past Grendon without return to set up their chance of picking up silverware.

Power were victorious in the first round with a 3-1 win against GSA before a nervy second round fixture which ended 3-2 as they edged past Netherton. A seven-goal thriller in the quarter-final against Goalacticos was the talk of the round with Power putting 5 past them to face Austin Ex Apprentices in the semi-final. Here, they had their toughest test as they were held to a 3-3 draw in normal time taking it to penalties where they just about squeezed through with a 5-4 victory. They will now be hoping to take home the silverware in the final.

Spectators will be hoping for a tightly contested game full of goal mouth action considering the two teams’ respective runs to the final and the already close calls that they have both experienced on their way to Ray Hall Lane.
