PREVIEW: VETERANS CUP FINAL

Highgate Wanderers Over-35s Take On Sutton Coldfield Town Over-35s In An Effort To Claim The 2019 Veterans Cup.

The penultimate County Cup Final takes place on Sunday 19 May as Highgate Wanderers Over-35s clash with Sutton Coldfield Town Over-35s at the County FA's Walter Goodman Stadium.

The match itself is set to get underway at 11.00am.

It could be fair to suggest that fans could be expecting a brilliant Cup Final for a variety of different reasons as they head to the home of Birmingham County FA.

Sutton Coldfield Town supporters will be hoping that they are able to earn some sort of redemption in their second Final in as many years. Also reaching the same stage last season, they were defeated by seven-time winners Monica Star Veterans despite coming from behind on two occasions.

Rob Allsopp’s men got this year’s campaign off to a near-perfect start as they cruised past Cob Sports Veterans 16-0 in the First Round. They then provided even more entertainment as they produced a thrilling 4-2 win against Erdington Brookvale Over-35s. Chalking up a 2-0 win against Trooper Over-35s Veterans, the team followed that up with another memorable game with a 4-3 win against Coundon Court Old Boys Over-35s.

One aspect that has also massively assisted them this season has been the presence of some former Premier League stars. Former Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Stoke City man Lee Hendrie has been patrolling the midfield, whilst ex-Football League striker Darren Byfield has helped out up front. With the two possessing plenty of experience between them, Sutton will be hoping to call upon that to help them lift the Cup come the Final.

Elsewhere, Highgate will be hoping that they are able to upset the odds as they aim to lift their first-ever Veterans Cup. Their run to Final suggests that they could do just that. Tim Hufton’s troops kicked their campaign off with a 10-1 trouncing of Coles Lane Veterans before then hitting a further five against Springville KNBP Veterans. Their Quarter-Final clash was not so straight-forward as the two teams played out a 6-4 thriller, with Highgate running out victors. The team secured their place in the Final as they squeezed past Continental Star Veterans 3-2.

Looking at the respective runs of both teams, supporters could be in for a memorable game.
