Walking Football Referee Workshop
On Thursday 16 February 2023, Referee Development Officer Keiran Forrest and Football Development Officer Harley Hetherington delivered a Referee Workshop to our Walking Football Referees.
The course was delivered to benefit the fantastic team of match officials operating in the Birmingham County Walking Football League, as well as a few counter-parts from Oxfordshire FA. The day began by reviewing the current Walking Football Laws of the Game, and discussions were fruitful with passionate conversation taking place discussing best practices.
The session then looked at a selection of clips, most notably on ‘Contact’ in the game. This created tremendous discussion around what is classified as contact and what an ‘expected’ decision may be. The attention then turned to the differences between ‘Walking’ and ‘Running’ and this was partnered with some practical activity. During the activity all participants had the opportunity to referee a ‘live game’ for a brief period of time learning how to manage player behaviour and make quick decisions. From here we returned to the classroom to discuss the future of Walking Football Refereeing and the next steps to help enhance the match officials working on the league.
